Smurfs 3D Movie Now Casting
Sony Pictures Animation Inc. and Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. are currently casting kids for The Smurfs feature film. The motion picture will be Sony Pictures Animation’s first hybrid of live-action and animation and will be released in both 2D and 3D. The film is in pre-production; shooting will be between 2009-2010, with an expected release date of December 17, 2010.
The Smurfs will be produced by Jordan Kerner (Charlotte’s Web) and directed by Raja Gosnell (Scooby-Doo and Beverly Hills Chihuahua). The script was written by J. David Stem and David N. Weiss (Shrek 2 and Jimmy Neutron) and is being “polished” by Audrey Wells (George of the Jungle). Details of the storyline have not been released. Rumored actors for the film are John Lithgow as Gargamel and Julia Sweeney.
The Smurfs are best known in the U.S for the long-running Hanna-Barbera cartoon TV series which ran as part of NBC‘s Saturday-morning lineup from 1981-1990.
Online audition videos are currently being accepted for the roles of an 8-10 year old female named Sophie and a 13-16 year old male, Sophie’s brother Sam. More info on these characters as well as access to script sides and audition video submission instructions can be found at www.backstage.com.
