Smith to tackle Red State first
Quite a few fans of Kevin Smith are more than likely relieved to see that the next project, whichever one of the two that he’s got on the back burner it may be, will be both written and directed by him. The bitter taste of Cop Out still lingers in our mouths, whether or not we like to admit it. The only thing is, a lot of us were under the impression that he would take on Hit Somebody, and not the horror flick Red State. Today he revealed through his Twitter feed (via /Film) that Red State is his next project he’s taking on first, and that initial filming will commence this July.
Smith continues on to say that he’ll be filming Hit Somebody shortly after filming wraps for Red State. Possibly a double dose of Smith films in 2011? We’ll see about that. Hit Somebody already has Sean William Scott attached to the lead role of a hockey player with a talent for fighting. The story is based on the song of the same name by Warren Zevon, which was written by Mitch Albom.
For those of you who are interested to figure out what Red State is all about, continue reading at some of the plot that Smith spewed out awhile back (from The Playlist).:
The movie’s called ‘Red State’ and it’s very much about that subject matter, that point of view and that position taken to the absolute extreme. It’s certainly not Phelps himself but it’s very much inspired by a Phelps figure,” revealed Smith. “And to me, too, the notion of using a Phelps-like character as a villain, as horrifying and scary as that guy can be, there’s even something more insidious than him that lurks out there in as much as a public or a government that allows it and that’s the other thing that I’m trying to examine in a big, big way. It’s weird because for a few months I’ve been saying ‘horror movie’ and technically it is, but it’s also not a very traditional horror movie in the sense that people have been asking me, ‘Is it a slasher movie? Is it like the Japanese horror flicks?’ It’d be much easier to just show it to them when I’m done and be like, ‘This is what I meant.’ At which point I’m sure there’ll be people saying, ‘This ain’t a horror movie!’ But to me, it is.
Criticise Cop Out all you want, but it’s the fact that it did good business at the US box office that means Smith has been finally able to get Red State into production. I’ll take a studio direct-for-hire job every now and then if it means he gets to make the movies he wants.

Oh totally. I mean yea, almost everybody doesn’t like it, but it did make itself some bank. Think he did it just to get the other films off the ground? Possibly.
I really enjoyed COP OUT. It took me back to a time when you films didn’t cater to ADD ridden teenagers. Say what you want about the flick, but I thought it was a solid picture.
