Shutter Island conquers all

Since the Martin Scorsese directed picture Shutter Island was the only major release during this past weekend, it was pretty much inevitable with everything backing it that the feature would be getting quite a hefty box office total for the weekend. That was a pretty legitimate guess, since the Paramount Pictures film made an estimated $40.2 Million. A lot of us were looking forward to seeing what this film was all about, especially since it was originally set to be released in October but due to financial reasonings had to be pushed all the way back to February.

Valentine’s Day and Avatar still managed to cling onto the near top, the bigger surprise of the two being the fact that Avatar is still managing to bring in all sorts of cash despite being in theaters for ten weeks now. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is still holding on strong, making $15.3 Million and wrangling out it’s domestic total so far to be an estimated $58 Million, which is pretty good for the novel adaptation.

Check out the rest of the totals below from Box Office Mojo.:

Weekend Box Office (February 19-21)

  1. Shutter Island  ($40.2 M)
  2. Valentine’s Day  ($17.1 M)
  3. Avatar  ($16.1 M)
  4. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief  ($15.3 M)
  5. The Wolfman  ($9.8 M)
  6. Dear John  ($7.3 M)
  7. Tooth Fairy  ($4.5 M)
  8. Crazy Heart  ($3 M)
  9. From Paris With Love  ($2.5 M)
  10. Edge of Darkness  ($2.2 M)

We jump into the final stretch of February movies, mainly due to the fact that this time around it’s a leap year, but there’s still all sorts of different flicks that you can check out. There’s the Kevin Smith movie Cop Out along with The Crazies in the wide releases. Within the realms of limited there is The Yellow Handkerchief, A Prophet and Defendor.

  1. I think the beauty of the entire movie is you don’t know how to feel and you don’t know which to believe. You are very much in the mind of Leo’s character. Paranoid and stuck between two different things that both could very much be true. I called it very early on. The fact that it didn’t show him anywhere else but the Ferry and the Island. He has experienced Trauma. The Doctor said he does experimental procedures. Patients seemed coached. Just met his partner. And there wasn’t much to the movie unless he was crazy. Frankly, practically from the beginning I just felt that’s the only way it could have been.
