Searchlight finds Betty Anne Waters

Fox Searchlight picks up the rights for distribution internationally and through North America for Betty Anne Waters. The film, set to already be released in the fall, is based on a true story about an unemployed single mother who she saw her brother convicted for a murder/robbery in 1983 and sentenced to life in prison. Convinced of his innocence, she spent the next decade earning a law degree and eventually proved his innocence.

Among those in the cast is Sam Rockwell, Juliette Lewis, Peter Gallagher, Melissa Leo and Minnie Driver. The film is directed and produced by Tony Goldwyn along with Andrew S. Karsch and Andrew Sugerman. The script was penned by Pamela Gray. Here’s a little more on what Fox Searchlight said on the deal (Variety).:

“Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, backed by an extraordinary supporting cast, deliver powerhouse performances in Tony Goldwyn’s emotionally resonant film,” Searchlight co-prexies Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley said in announcing the acquisition.
