SDCC ’10: Working Title developing Astro City

The popularity of the superhero genre continues to grow with films such as Thor, Green Lantern, and Captain America: The First Avenger set to be released next summer. However, we have yet to see an interesting take on the genre. There have been a few attempts with Watchmen, Kick-Ass, and Hancock, but nothing ground breaking, in my opinion.

A fresh take on the genre is becoming more and more necessary, and now, one of the more well-regarded comics will be coming to the big screen.

At Comic-con (via ComingSoon),  Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan have obtained the rights to adapt Kurt Busiek’s award winning graphic novel series, Astro City. Busiek has been turning down offers to adapt the comic for years, “but Working Title’s track record on great movies like ‘Love Actually, ‘Oh Brother, Where Are Thou?’ and ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ and their commitment to high-quality, character-driven storytelling, make me confident that this is the perfect place to make an ‘Astro City’ film a reality.”  The series tells the story of superheroes and villains living in a metropolis since the end of World War I. The heroes are different takes on other popular heroes, like Batman and Superman. However, it’s shown from different view points, such as a super-villain adjusting to live after prison.

The comics debut in 1995, and have since won twenty Eisner Awards and Harvey Awards. Fellner and Bevan will serve as producers, with Ben Barenholtz and Jonathan Alpers as executive producers. Kurt Busiek will be adapting the screenplay.
