SDCC ’10: The Hobbit won’t be in 3-D

There hasn’t been much hope for fans who are eagerly anticipating The Hobbit. The films still have no director, no green-light, and is at risk of losing Sir Ian McKellen. However, fans can rejoice as The Hobbit reportedly won’t be released in 3-D.

At Comic-con (via The Playlist), the staff members of TheOneRing.net have confirmed the news, which was followed by a huge cheer from the crowd. Talks about using the format begin last spring. No reason was given as to why this decision was made, but one can speculate it was due to the cost to use 3-D.

Despite this news, the film still could very well not happen. MGM is still in bankruptcy, which means there is no money to spend on the already expensive budget the films would require. However, the studio is looking at Spyglass, Lionsgate, or Summit Entertainment to buy them out. Producer/possible director Peter Jackson remains optimistic they can meet the target start date of January, and has been taking an international casting tour for the films.
