SDCC ’10: Joe Johnston talks Captain America

When adapting comics books to movies, screenwriters have always put a different on the character. Christopher Nolan did this with his Batman films, as did Jon Favreau with Iron Man. With almost no news on what Joe Johnston has planned for Captain America, fans are curious as to how true the film will stay to the character.

According to The LA Times, Johnston intends to re-interpreting, sort of, what the comic book version of Steve Rogers was.” He then added: “We’re sort of putting a slightly different spin on Steve Rogers, [who] will be a guy that wants to serve his country but he’s not a flag-waver.” When asked about the casting of Chris Evans, who is mostly known for playing wise guy roles, he answered, “the character will fight the enemies of America but he won’t be a stiff, slogan-spouting guy.” They intended the character’s personality to not change when Rogers makes the transformation to Captain America, and “that’s really what’s important more than your strength and everything.” Johnston makes note this take on the character will be one “the fans are really going to appreciate.”

While many may be concerned the film will be too political, but Johnston wants the film to be “not about America so much as it is about the spirit of doing the right thing. It’s an international cast and an international story. It’s about what makes America great and what make the rest of the world great too.” Johnston is filming in London, but will take a break to promote the film at Comic-Con this Saturday. He’ll be joined by Chris Evans and other cast members.

Captain America: The First Avenger will open on July 22, 2011.
