Resident Evil: Afterlife owns the box-office

Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil: Afterlife easily conquered the weekend box-office. The fourth installment in the franchise based on the popular video game took in over $27 million, and was the greatest opening for the franchise. Last weekend’s number one film, The American, was kicked down to third place by Screen Gem’s Takers.

Here’s the top ten from Box-office Mojo:

1. Resident Evil: Afterlife ($27.7 mil)

2. Takers ($6.1 mil)

3. The American ($5.8 mil)

4. Machete ($4.2 mil)

5. Going The Distance ($3.8 mil)

6. The Other Guys ($3.6 mil)

7. The Last Exorcism ($3.4 mil)

8. The Expendables ($3.2 mil)

9. Inception ($3 mil)

10. Eat Pray Love ($2.9 mil)

This week will see the release of Alpha and Omega (September 17), Devil (September 17), Easy A (September 17), The Town (September 17), Never Let Me Go (Limited), Catfish (Limited), and Jack Goes Boating (Limited).
