Pacific Rim isn’t merging with Godzilla reboot
A couple of rumors have surfaced regarding Legendary Pictures upcoming Godzilla reboot (here). While the rumor that del Toro was offered to direct the film was quickly dismissed (here), but there was still the reports that a script written by Travis Beckham for Pacific Rim would be merging with Dave Callaham’s Godzilla script to fix it. However, it looks like that too won’t be happening.
Hitfix spoke with sources close to the project today, and dismissed the rumors. Beckham’s idea was described as being “set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.” The script for Pacific Rim does somewhat follow that plot, but there was more information that wasn’t in that “synopsis”. Beckham’s script is being kept under wraps, but it’s reported that it wouldn’t work as a Godzilla film. It seems that Godzilla isn’t the only giant monster heading to the big screen, and many studios are wanting to cash in on the genre.
So, it’s good that we got all that cleared up as the synopsis sounded a little too similar to Godzilla’s last feature film, Godzilla: Final Wars, which was met with mixed reactions from fans. Dave Callaham is still attached to write the script for Legendary’s Godzilla reboot, and the studio are reportedly happy with his work. In fact, they’re soo happy that discussions for a director are under-way, but you shouldn’t expect them to talk with del Toro as he’ll be busy with At The Mountains of Madness.
