No plans for Justice League?
It was widely assumed that after WB canceled a live-action Justice League a couple of years ago, they would following in Marvel’s footsteps, and build up to an ensemble film. It was rumored that a Justice League film was green-lit with the idea of excluding Batman and Superman (here), but it seems those are now false. It seems DC wants to take a different approach to their properties.
Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment, spoke with IGN about what direction they will take with their films. “People make an assumption that we’re going to mirror Marvel’s strategy, for example with Avengers,” she said. DC will be bringing their characters to the big screen, but not with the intention of an ensemble film. “We do have a very different attitude about how you build a content slate. And it isn’t necessarily about connecting those properties together to build into a single thing,” Nelson continued. Their intention will be to create great stories for each of their properties, but not have them inter-connect with each other. “We think we’ve got great stories and characters that will lend themselves to great standalone experiences, and that’s the way we’re focusing on it,” she said.
Everyone assumes they’re following Marvel’s steps, but Diane Nelson claims that’s not the plan. “There is a healthy competition as there would be in any business. But we do not spend our days thinking about what Marvel is doing,” she said. This may make fans happy, who were disappointed at the thought of excluding two of DC’s most popular characters from the team. And while they have no intentions of making a film now, that could very well change after they get each of their characters a feature film. Meanwhile, development on The Flash, Green Lantern 2, The Man of Steel, and Batman 3 are currently under-way. No plans for Wonder Woman or Aquaman has been announced, but we should hear something by the end of the year.
