No deal set for Avatar sequels

After James Cameron spent years working on Avatar, and with the epic success of the film, it’s been a question about what film he’ll make next. He’s already got a number of projects lined-up including a live-action adaptation of Battle Angle Alita, The Dive,  and will is also busy producing At The Mountains of Madness with Guillermo del Toro. However, we can probably now mark off Cameron’s Avatar sequels as his next project.

In an interview with Collider, Cameron revealed that a deal to make Avatar 2 has yet to be made with the studio. “I wouldn’t say it’s inevitable because we still haven’t worked out our deal with 20th Century Fox. So we’re still in an ongoing negotiation on that”, he said. The problem is that Cameron is making a “plan that stretches forward 10 years” and the executives “don’t like to think that long term.” With Avatar grossing over $2 billion at the box-office, a deal will definitely get made. However, Cameron doubts those will be his next films to direct. “Whether that’s my next film or not remains to be seen,” he said.

Perhaps delaying Avatar 2 may not be such a bad idea. Cameron has spent the last 10 years of his life making the first, and the sequel will likely take just as long, if not longer. Many have been waiting for Cameron’s live-action Battle Angela Alita since it was announced years ago, and that could be a good film to direct in between. However, Cameron has also mentioned the possibility of using the same technology from Avatar in Battle Angel. Cameron has also recently been circling a 3D project on Cleopatra (here) that he’s fascinated to make. But there’s no commitment on Cameron’s part just yet.
