Nigerians hate District 9

While the film has already dropped out of the U.S. box office Top 10, it’s still being release in different markets, and when it tried to open in Nigeria, the BBC reported this: “The information minister said she had ordered the Nigerian film and video censors’ board to ask all cinemas to stop showing the film and to confiscate it. [They] have also formally written to Sony Pictures Entertainment, the company that produced this film, demanding an unconditional apology for this unwarranted attack on Nigeria’s image.”

I heard some faint rumors of the film being racist, but there seems to be a dig at the Nigerian governmen within the film, with the gang leader with the compound named Obasanjo, also the last name of the former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

What do you think? Racist? Nigerians over-reacting?District 9 the new Birth of a Nation?

  1. Not racist. only showcasing Nigerian gangs, not the Nigerian people as a whole. Hell, they showcase how fucked up South Africa is more than Nigeria.
