New Line starts up Speedy Gonzales
Looney Tunes is starting to go back into fashion once more as New Line Cinema swoops down and gets scribe Alec Sokolow to pen Speedy Gonzales. The picture will be thrown into the realms of live action and CGI animation, meaning that the little Mexican mouse will be in glorious CGI with George Lopez lending his voice to the character.
Known as the fastest mouse in all of Mexico, Speedy debuted in the 1950s as a regular nemesis of Sylvester the Cat. Friz Freleng and Hawley Pratt’s 1955 Warner Bros. short about the tiny hero, “Speedy Gonzales,” won the Academy Award for best short subject, cartoons that year (THR).
Producing the picture is Lynette Ramirez, George and Anne Lopez under George Lopez Presents with Jill Arthur, Jerry Weintraub and Tracy Ryerson. No word yet on when exactly they want to get this feature out by, but it’s something that does not look too appealing.
