Nearly all of Transformers 3 will be shot in 3-D
It was recently announced that Michael Bay’s Transformers 3 will be shot in 3-D, instead of being converted in post-production. However, it was assumed that only the action scenes would be filmed with 3-D, and the dialogue scenes won’t be. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura spoke with Cinema Blend about using 3-D technology.
Bonaventura stated not a 100% of the film would be shot with Pace 3-D cameras, but they’re shooting most of it that way. Also, that director Michael Bay “learned how to do it in about a day.” The Producer mentioned that “ It feels very 21st century” when watching the footage on the monitor with the glasses. While the action scenes in 3-D will look amazing,  Bonaventura finds the non-action scenes to be interesting as well.
Bay has made it clear in his previous statement that he’s against 3-D, and has even stated that he finds it to be a “gimmick”.However, the director ultimately gave in to use 3-D cameras, but why? Bonaventura says they did tests, and ended up liking the results. “I’m not sure he’ll do every movie in 3D, but he liked it,” says  Bonaventura. However, he still isn’t completely sold on the 3-D craze Hollywood is going through right now. But he thinks “the technology is going to continue to improve so you don’t have these, sadly, really awful renditions of 3D.”
It’s good to know that not everyone in Hollywood is sold on 3-D just yet, but the fact Transformers 3 is shot in 3-D means that it won’t be going away anytime soon. Filming is currently under-way in Chicago, and will be heading next to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Transformers 3 will open in 3-D and 2-D on July 1, 2011.
