Natalie Portman defies Gravity

It was almost looking as if the drawn-out search for the lead in Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity was about to come to an end when Natalie Portman began discussions for the role. The actress was Cuaron’s top choice after Angelina Jolie passed on the film twice, and seeing Portman’s performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. However, it’s a tough break for Cuaron as Natalie Portman has turned down the studio’s offer.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Portman turned down their offer after looking over the script. Portman’s representatives claim that scheduling conflicts were the reason she turned down the offer. This is only a minor set back for Warner Bros. as they’ve already begun negotiating with Sandra Bullock to take for the role.

The studio wants an actress who is can carry the film, and draw an audience. Several actresses were approached for the role, including Scarlett Johansson (Iron Man 2), Blake Lively (Green Lantern), Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy), and Marion Cotillard (Inception). It’s unknown if Bullock will take the job, and if she doesn’t then, the studio may go back to one of the listed actresses.
