Natalie Portman could join Alien prequels
Natale Portman’s has become a much desired actress after word of her performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. She was recently rumored to be wanted for the female lead of Lois Lane in Zack Snyder’s The Man of Steel, and Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, which she turned down. Now, the actress may be in talks to join Ridley Scott’s Alien Prequels.
According to Vulture, Portman is the latest to join the shortlist of actresses for the lead in the Alien prequels. The other names include Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo), Carey Mulligan (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), and possibley Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans). However, the studio has only shown enthusiasm for Portman and Rapace. The role will keep the tradition of a bad-ass female heroine, with this one being a Colonial Marine general.
It’s also revealed that Damon Lindeloff (Lost), who was brought on board to re-write the script, has turned in a draft for the films that the studio loves. The original concept was to tell the origin of the “Space Jockey” that was briefly shown in the original Alien, but it’s uncertain what the films are about now. One reason the execs. over at Fox like Lindeloff’s script is that it’s creative and it won’t require a huge budget to make. That’s good news for Fox as they were recently clashing with Ridley Scott over how big the films’ budget should be (here). However, the new draft could possibly earn the films a PG-13, which probably won’t fit well with fans of the franchise.
An official title has yet to be given to the films, but Scott and the studio are currently working on that issue. The prequels won’t be a reboot or remake like we see with so many good franchise in Hollywood today. These films are said to “returns the franchise to its roots,” according to an insider. There’s no word on when filming is looking to begin yet. You can probably look for the first of these may be in mid-to-late 2012.
