Mike Mitchell negotiating to direct Alvin and The Chipmunks 3

Twentieth Century Fox was put in a desperate position recently when Betty Thomas bailed out on directing Alvin and The Chipmunks 3 (here). The studio has since been looking for a new director, and meet the start date in less than 2 weeks. And it seems they may have found the right person.

The LA Times reports that Mike Mitchell (Shrek Forever After) is in negotiations for the job. Fox is looking to not release the film in 3D, but that my change if Mitchell signs on. The plot for the film focuses on the Chipmunks getting shipwrecked on an island. Fox has yet to comment on the news.
