Meryl Streep to star in Margaret Thatcher biopic

Meryl Streep has the most Oscar nominations of any actress to this day, and she may now be in talks for her next. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Streep is in talks to star in a biopic on the controversial and long-governing British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

The film will reunite Streep with Mama Mia director, Phyllida Lloyd, and is titled Thatcher. Jim Broadbent is also in talks to star in the film as Thatcher’s husband, Dennis. If cast, the role would be the highest-profile character Streep has played. Streep has received several Oscar nominations on portraying real-life women such as cooking expert Julia Child, whistle-blower Karen Silkwood, and  author Susan Orlean.

The film sets in 1982, as Thatcher tries to salvage her career preceding the Falklands War. After the war, Thatcher saw her approval ratings sky rocket, and earned her a second term.  The screenplay is being written by Brian Fillis. Damien Jones will be producing, and helped come up with the story. Pathe and BBC Films will be developing the film.
