Marvel slows down work on Runaways (Updated)

Marvel Studios has been looking ahead towards their post-The Avengers line-up of comic book adaptations. Iron Man 3 already has a set release date (here), and work on a Black Widow spin-off was recently announced (here) among many other projects. However, the film that was being eyed as the first project after The Avengers has been stalled.

Deadline Hollywood reports that production on Peter Sollet‘s Runaways has slowed down. Development on the film had been moving quickly, and was supposedly beginning to build its cast (here). It was suspected that it was in trouble due to being too similar to Kick-Ass, but reports claim Marvel simply has too many projects, and want to take their time with this film. One issue that may have contributed was that production was scheduled to begin in March (here), which is around the same time The Avengers will kick-off.

This is good news on Marvel’s part as they already have a number of big films such as Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Avengers being released over the next couple summers. Not to mention that Iron Man 3 is already being planned, and after many felt Iron Man 2 wasn’t as good as the first, fans are wanting an improvement on the next. Also, Thor and Captain America are getting the much-hated 3D post-conversion (here), and they’ll need to use all the time they can to make a quality conversion. Runaways is one of Marvel’s lesser known properties, and concentrating on their bigger projects would be the smartest move to make.

Update: Bleeding Cool is reporting that production will begin in 2012 for a likey a release in 2013.

  1. It’d be cool if they could talk Whedon into directing this one too. His run on Runaways was fun.

Yeah, that would be cool, but production set to begin right after ‘The Avengers’ and Whedon will need a break after that film.
