Make-up effects artists Face Off in new Syfy Channel reality show

Even with everything going digital and CG, nothing can top the simple approach of rubber and latex. Syfy Channel is airing a new reality show that will test a group of up-and-comers skills. I am pulling for a friend of mine who worked on Darin Scott’s Dark House, and who is also a big supporter of Killer Film, Megan Areford!

Face Off – Premieres Wednesday, January 26, at 10PM (ET/PT– Face Off is a competition/elimination series exploring the world of special-effects make-up artists and the unlimited imagination that allows them to create amazing works of living art. The contestants are tasked with elaborate feature challenges including executing full body paint make up on models and creating their own horror villain.  Not only will the show incorporate make-up effects, it will include a wide range of skill sets including prosthetics, 3-D design, sculpting, eye enhancers, casting and molding. Each episode involves incredible reveals of the competitors’ finished work, and the drama of one contestant being sent home by the panel of expert and celebrity judges. It all culminates in one winner and one grand prize that will launch a career.

Face Off is a production of Mission Control Media with Michael Agbabian and Dwight Smith serving as executive producers.

  1. Face Off is off to a great start! While the format is nothing new the subject matter is. And as a fan of the Horror and SciFi genres I certainly appreciate getting some insight into the hard work these people put in to ignite our imaginations. As a DISH Network employee and subscriber I try to watch as many of the new series as I can to stay up to date and this one made an impression. I am certainly glad I recently upgraded to HD though, as the added clarity really matters for a show that’s all about the details. With the price of flat panel HD TV’s coming down so much and DISH offering HD free for life on their top packages why not?
I’m certainly looking forward to the rest of this season and good luck to Megan Areford!

  2. I’m soooo glad Frank is off the show. I was hoping he’d be eliminated after the first episode. I don’t think he quite understands what it means to be an artist; cocky is a thought, not a personality…he examplifies what all artists try NOT to be. We’re all cocky to a point, however, we have enough respect and “civilizedness” in our art that someone like him doesn’t deserve the title [artist].
