Liman glances at Gambit

Doug Liman is keeping his eyes on the script by Joel and Ethan Coen on the remake of Gambit. The feature is off of the 1966 film that starred Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine in the feature directed by Ronald Neame. In the feature, Caine played a cat burglar who tries to rob a billionaire of his priceless statue and enlists the help of a waitress who is a dead ringer for the victim’s late wife. While the burglar has carefully planned the job in his head, the execution is complicated by his relationship with his pretty accomplice (Deadline).

Liman is completing the Sean Penn and Naomi Watts film Fair Game for a yet to be announced 2010 release date, but nothing else is set in stone for the director on any new projects. Mike Lobell is producing the picture, and after waiting impatiently with finding a director he could possibly have his shot at finally getting this feature made.

Currently the Coen brothers are in the middle of filming the remake True Grit, starring Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin, Matt Damon, Barry Pepper and Hailee Steinfeld. The western is set for a Christmas Day release this year under Paramount Pictures.
