Legendary Pictures creates its own comic book division

Comic book movies continue to grow more and more popular with each day. There’s already four new superhero films arriving next summer, and more on the way over the next few years. With all the demand for these films, WB created DC Entertainment Inc. and Marvel Studios merged with Disney to pump out more films. Now, Legendary Pictures is looking to get into the action with their own division that will “look to bring the newly-created comic-based IP produced by the venture to other entertainment platforms such as film and television.”
In an official press release (via Collider), the studio names veteran comic book editor Bob Schreck as Editor-in-chief of the new division. “Bob is an iconic editor and one of most highly-regarded curators and editors of comic culture in our industry. He is the perfect leader with the right balance of passion and editorial skills to spearhead Legendary Comics,” said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary Pictures. This new division will also be used to ”being a new home for groundbreaking artists and the characters and stories they create, in an art form we love,”according to Tull. Many of fans’ favorite comic book writers such as Neil Gaiman (Stardust), Max Brooks (World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie World) and Frank Miller (The Dark Knight Returns, 300, Sin City) are involved with Legendary Comics.
Legendary Pictures already has a strong following in the geek community. They’ve released such adaptations as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, 300, Watchmen, Inception, and Trick r’ Treat. The studio also has many more upcoming film as the Godzilla reboot, Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot, and Nolan’s highly-anticipated The Dark Knight Rises. With the talent of Frank Miller, Max Brooks, Neil Gaiman, and Bob Schreck, we can look forward to many great projects soon. Schreck has already begun his new job, and is set to release their first work the first half of 2011.
