Jonah Hex to be scored by Mastodon

Submitted by Jon Peters on October 27, 2009 – 2:00 pmNo Comment

mastodonThe superhero film Jonah Hex, starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox hits theaters June 18th, 2010, and now we learn the Atlanta rock band, Mastodon, will be scoring the film. Mastodon has used stories in their albums like 2004’s Leviathan, that used Moby Dick as song and musical inspiration. It’s not a stretch to consider this band for a score.

“Since day one, we’ve always written albums thinking the music was the score of a movie, ” says bassist Troy Sanders.

Jimmy Hayward, Jonah Hex’s director, said he used Mastodon’s Blood Mountain album as a source to finish the long in-development script. The score was recorded and is an hour long in length. John Powell, composer of such films like Bourne Indentity, will use Mastodon’s compositions over parts of the film, where needed.

As a Mastodon fan, this is one cool project. Go listen to their latest album, Crack the Skye, and listen to the music to get a wonderful hint at their score.
