Jolie passes on Gravity, again
Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity could be falling out of orbit. The lead role was written specifically for Angelina Jolie, but left after the project switched over to WB. Several actresses were screen-tested for the part, but a second deal for Jolie was made.
Now, Deadline Hollywood reports that she has once again turned down the role, despite the large sum of money offered. This has put Warner Bros. in a difficult situation. While the studio could certainly cast another actress, WB wants an actress who can drawn an audience. The film also stars Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man 2), and can certainly bring in an audience. However, his role in the film is small, and it was never meant for him to carry the film.
The film centers on astronauts repairing the Hubble telescope, who are then hit with space junk. The film plays similar to Cast Away, with the mother attempting to make it back to Earth, and re-unite with her daughter. It’s possible that Jolie could eventually change her mind, but she’s busy with several other projects, including making her directorial debut. Production is intended to begins next year after Downey finishes Sherlock Holmes 2.
