James Cameron on 3-D movies

James Cameron made 3-D popular with his most recent film, Avatar, but even he says that the craze Hollywood has with the format is ridiculous. Now, according to the Daily Express, James Cameron wants there to be a new organization to publicize and protect 3-D films:

“What I’d love to do is put together some kind of a forum with the DGA (Directors Guild of America), let’s say, and maybe the ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) and we’d have to do it in Canada, too. I think some quality standards do need to be discussed. I think the studios and big distribution companies need to be included in that dialogue. Let’s not do stupid stuff that’s going to hurt this burgeoning marketplace.”

Cameron used Warner Bros Pictures’ last minute decision to convert Clash of the Titans as a good example of this. There needs to be some control on this genre if it’s going to stick around. Hollywood wants almost any film to be converted, but not all need to be in this format. To myself so far, Avatar has been the only film that hasn’t made it gimmicky.
