James Cameron circling Cleopatra: A Life

James Cameron has already mentioned the possibility that his sequels to Avatar could be delayed by another film (here). It’s not his long-awaited live-action adaptation of Battle Angel Alita, but a 3D biopic on Cleopatra.

Deadline Hollywood reports that Cameron and Sony have been considering the possibility of directing the film, which Angelina Jolie is already set to star (here). The rights to Stacy Schiff’s book, Cleopatra: A Life were picked up back in June with Scott Rudin as producer. The film is being fast-tracked with a start date looking to begin next year to be shot in 3D. It may seem odd the studio is trying to get the film out fast, but Bran Helgeland’s is reported to be “brilliant script deserving of epic treatment.”

Jolie’s casting has already caused racial controversy, but Amy Pascal, C0-chairmen of Sony Pictures Entertainment, believes Jolie is the perfect woman for the role.  ”She’s a real star who can open a movie by herself” and “she knows she was born to play this part”, she said. Pascal also assure us “it won’t be cheap”, and is the next Gone With The Wind.  The project could prove to be a huge risk with Sony, but Cameron has always shown to risk big on his projects. However, it’s unknown if he’ll accept the job.
