*UPDATED*Is Johnny Depp the next Time Lord?

Work on a big-screen version of the popular British sci-fi show, Doctor Who was first pitched back in 2008 by Russell T. Davies. While there’s been almost no news on the film recently, it’s apparently slated for a 2012 release date. But if you’re hoping to see David Tennant return or Matt Smith, then you’ll have to wait as Johnny Depp is rumored to star in the film.

According to Tor, Depp has been confirmed to play The Doctor. Fans may not be keen on the idea of an American adaptation of the show, but producer Russel T.  Davies guarantees it will be “just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television program.” This film is hoping to introduce the show to more than just the fans.

The film will apparently involve The Doctor going through space and time in the TARDIS, treating an illness brought on by aliens, and curing the bubonic plague, then the ebola virus in Africa. The Doctor’s most recognizable foe, The Daleks, are set to appear as well. The story elements have yet to be confirmed, but it’s not the first time Davies has introduced different elements to the franchise. However, the producer has also admitted before to lying about to the press about story elements.

Update: According to Io9, a representative over at BBC says that there are “no plans” for feature film on Doctor Who and is “pure speculation”.

  1. Y’know which Hollywood star would be a perfect Doctor? Jeff Bridges!

    Matt Keith Reply:

I think he could pull it off, but I think they should go with the current Doctor, Matt Smith, to make a film.
