How much of Transformers 3 was shot in 3D?

Like most of the big Hollywood blockbusters coming out next summer, Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon will be arriving in 3D. That being said, we’ve already heard that not all of the film will be shot in 3D (here), and a portions of the film will be converted in post-production (here). That left many uneasy about about the film after reports have come in that even the scenes shot in 3D weren’t turning out great (here).

Ain’t It Cool News visited the set of the film back when filming was going on in Chicago, and revealed just how much of the film was shot and what will be post-converted. “According to Bay, about 60 percent of the movie you’ll see in the theater will have been shot in 3D. The rest will be either CGI (which is much easier to make look good in 3D) or post-converted,” he said. You may be wondering whey Bay didn’t just shoot the entire film in 3D, but the decision to shoot in 3D wasn’t made at the last minute, and the film was re-budgeted to compensate for the 3D Pace cameras. Despite Bay’s previous feeling about 3D, he spent an entire day working with a 3D camera to realize it’s limitations. “It doesn’t work well with close-ups or when there’s a lot of smoke in the air,” Bay said.

Although, this shouldn’t worry anyone as many films that are released in 3D have also used the post-conversion process for portions of the film. Yes, even James Cameron’s Avatar had portions converted in post-production. The film isn’t scheduled to be released until July 1 next year, which give Bay more than enough time to get it right. Bay also notes that “we won’t be able to tell the difference in going between the two types of footage.”

The second thing the site mentioned in the article is the first trailer for the film will be coming online on Wednesday. We’ve already heard a taste of the what the trailer has to offer (here), but it’s only a teaser with the official trailer coming later on. It will also be playing in front of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader this Friday and Tron: Legacy the week after. Both are being released in 3D, and we can hopefully get a taste of how the 3D for Transformers: Dark of the Moon will be. A sneak peak at the trailer will also be airing on Entertainment Tonight probably tonight or tomorrow.
