Hounsou on Black Panther, The Avengers 2
While out promoting his new film in Julie Taymor’s The Tempest, actor Djimon Hounsou told i09 that a while back, director Tim Story promised him the role of the Black Panther in Fantastic Four 3, which obviously never happened. The character’s debut was in Fantastic Four, issue #52 (1966).
But Hounsou, who voices the character in the animated series, claimed that was “the idea: using it as a leverage to tell a feature story.” He goes on to explain: “He’s a king, he’s a man of the people, and he’s very powerful — he challenges himself throughout his kingdom, and I think that’s rare when the king puts his own life [on the line] and challenges [people] to beat him, in order to see [who's] the best out there… He’s really cool. He comes from a world in Africa that is cool, and has all those minerals and it’s very exciting. It’s just a matter of time for that to be realized.”
Interesting. Marvel was aiming to build smaller budgeted films on third tier characters a while back (here), but there’s been no hint at a Black Panther film yet. Hounsou seemed confident to i09 that the character would appear before an Avengers 2 appearance.
