The Hobbit has been green-lit!

The Hobbit was already rumored to be getting the official green-light soon (here), and that Peter Jackson had been confirmed as director (here). However, that was soon dismissed by Jackson himself (here), who wasn’t sure when an official green-lit for the much anticipated The Hobbit would be given. But could it be today?

The Wrap was told by an inside source the project has finally been given the go-ahead by the studios involved. Not only that, but Peter Jackson was once again confirmed to direct the films. Apparently, a deal has been made with MGM and Warner Bros. earlier this week, and that production would begin sometime in February. No cast has been confirmed yet, and there’s still the issue of the SGA’s boycott against the films that could move production out of New Zealand.

MGM still continuing to restructure, and could either go with the deal made by Spyglass Entertainment or merge with Lionsgate, who has made a last minute bid to the troubled studio. It would seem odd that MGM would pitch in their half of the money for production, which the films’ total cost coming around $500 million, before they have their bankruptcy settled. However, if a deal can’t be made to film in New Zealand, with sets already constructed, then it would cost them even more to move to a different location. It would also delay the films even further. If true, then would could be finally seeing The Hobbit, Part I in early December of 2012.

Update: According to HitFix, Warner Bros. issued an official press release confirmed the news.
