Fox picks up The Three Stooges

The Farrelly Brothers’ The Three Stooges may have found a permanent home. The project has switched studios several times over the last decade. It was first at Columbia Pictures, then it went to Warner Bros., and finally MGM where it was delayed along with several other projects. Deadline Hollywood reports that MGM’s bankruptcy plan was approved today, and that opened to the door for Twentieth Century Fox to grab the film.

Bobby and Peter Farrelly are still directing the script written by Mike Cerrone (Outside Providence, Me, Myself and Irene), but no cast has been secured. Jim Carrey recently announced that he’s out (here), and Sean Penn has been in and out of the project for a while. It was then the financial problems at MGM occurred, and the film was delayed. It’s uncertain if Benicio Del Toro is still attached to play Moe as well. However, casting is scheduled to begin immediately, and begin shooting on March 14 next year.

The biggest problem the duo are facing is replacing the iconic roles of Moe, Curly, and Larry, but Peter Farrelly has a finished script that will play to their strengths. “The script is ready to go, and we are opening up these roles to the world right now. We’ll make it with the best possible people,” he said. The film will also be in the same style as the original shorts. “There will be non-stop slapping, more in the tone of Dumb and Dumber than anything else we’ve done,” Peter Farrelly said. We can also expect to see the film divided into three segments with the original theme songs playing throughout each one.
