Disney fast-tracks Alice in Wonderland to Blu-ray

Recently, WB announced that Sherlock Holmes was coming to Blu-ray/DVD in late March, a few months after its Christmas Day release, making the home video window really small. Disney is following similar suit, with the upcoming 3-D remake from Tim Burton. Alice in Wonderland is scheduled for a possible early June Blu-ray date, 13 weeks after its theatrical debut.

Why the short window? One reason is that the current flood of 3-D films are stressing a lot of theaters who are only capable of supporting one 3-D film at a time, and a few short weeks after the March 5th debut of Alice in Wonderland is WB’s Clash of the Titans. Also, the ability to quickly capitalize off of the hype and family-friendly subject matter, will increase revenue for the home video quickly.

It’s an odd move, especially if you’re an old-timer who use to wait for the VHS to come out over a year later. The home video market is vastly changing, with competition from illegal downloading and digital downloading, the venue dollar is a must for studio to grab. But for us home video collectors and buyers, this could be an interesting trend.

But will it hurt the theatrical performance?

  1. I don’t think it will hurt the theatrical sales. I am quite excited because I for one can’t keep up with all the movies coming out in theaters so some I wait for the dvd or blu ray. But sadly most have a long wait, after the theatrical release, before I can see it. That drives me batty! I am kinda stoked by this news. Thanks for sharing.

  2. No problem, and your story is echoed amongst many, that’s why I think Disney is doing it.
