Details on Avatar Special Edition DVD/Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Fox will be re-releasing James Cameron’s Avatar in theaters this Friday, as you may have heard. This special edition will include approximately nine minutes of never-before-seen footage, including the much talked about Na’vi sex scene. However, an even longer version of the film will be released onto Blu-ray and DVD in November.

Producer Jon Landau has provided The Hollywood Reporter with a few details on what can expect from that release:

“We tried to look at what people have responded to in the film and give them more of that,” Landau said. “There’s a whole new scene that takes place in the (Na’vi) school, there’s more night bio-luminescence, there’s new creatures, and there is a new action scene. The scenes don’t just feel like added scenes — they are very organic to the story and embellish it.”

While the re-release this Friday can only be viewed in 3-D, that won’t be an option for the special edition DVD and Blu-ray. Only the 2-D version will be available to purchase, with a 3-D release sometime next year. No reason was given for the lack of a 3-D version. There’s no specific release date for this new edition, although sources have claimed November-just in time for Christmas.
