Deadpool will be an origin story

While Twentieth Century Fox’s Deadpool spin-off is still without a director (here) and a lead actor (here), a script by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Zombieland) has been completed. Their work on the script has been getting a lot of praise lately, and is said to be on the same level as Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. While we don’t know really anything about the script , the film will show how Wade Wilson came to be Deadpool.

Speaking with I09, co-writer Rhett Reese revealed that Deadpool’s origin will be shown. “Ultimately, I think despite how fun he is in the now, we really did want to explore how he became that way and why he became that way, we definitely delve into that,”he said. Reese also spoke on what he thinks makes the character of Deadpool so interesting.  “He’s a warped character, and that’s why he’s so fun to write. Various writers have tackled him and I think that particular club of people have always enjoyed being able to just go places with a character that you wouldn’t be able to go with any other character,” he said. Another reason enjoyed writing the script was “because he’s completely crazy” and that “you don’t have to place any limits on decorum, or what might pop into his head, what reference he might make to pop culture.”

Fans haves settled on the idea of Ryan Reynolds reprising the role from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but the actor will spend most of the screen time under a mask. That will be another issue that Reese will take into account with the movie. “I think there’s a good balance in the movie of seeing Wade Wilson pre-Deadpool and seeing his scarred face post-becoming Deadpool and having the mask on — which is how most comic fans envision Deadpool, is with the mask on,” he said. However, how much time we see Deadpool without the mask is unknown. Reese is happy with his work on the script, but when a director is finalized, it will most certainly be rewritten. But Reese hopes  it “doesn’t get rewritten too much.”
