Confirmed: The Dark Knight Rises will end Nolan’s trilogy
While Tim Burton’s two Batman films were well-received by fans, it paved the way for Joel Schumacher, and what is probably the worst Superhero film to date, Batman and Robin. That lead to Warner Bros., rebooting the saga with Christopher Nolan at the helm, and given us what is arguably two of the greatest Superhero films. However, that time is now coming to an end as The Dark Knight Rises has been confirmed as Nolan’s final Batman film.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Nolan made it official. “I must say that I’m glad — I’m very, very glad — to be embarking on the last chapter of our Batman saga without any sense of obligation or duty to the studio,” he said. It’s not really surprising as Nolan has said in the past this would be his last, but recent comments by Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne/Batman) have made some speculate that Nolan could do another film (here). Nolan has already proved himself to be a great director with his films, but he admits the success of Inception does help his confidence with this film. “They did very well with Inception. So I’m able to go into finishing our story in a very enthusiastic way,” he said.
Although, The Dark Knight Rises is already looking to be the biggest film of 2012, and it would be pretty obvious that Warner Bros. is adamant about continuing that franchise somehow. But it’s uncertain if the studio would continue Nolan’s universe with a new director or just reboot the series once again. With Nolan done with Batman after 2012, that leaves him open to create more original stories like Inception, or just make that into a series. “I always imagined Inception to be a world where a lot of other stories could take place,” Nolan said. He only mentioned that a video-game was in the works, but we’ve already heard that WB is possibly interested in a sequel (here).
The Dark Knight Rises is looking to begin production in May 2011 for a release in July of 2012.
