Captain America’s villain confirmed

Well, let’s let out a collective “duh”, because today, Coming Soon stated while out doing Wolfman press in L.A. that director Joe Johnston confirms that the villain in the upcoming Marvel film, The First Avenger: Captain America is -here’s that ‘duh’ moment- the Red Skull!

The Red Skull has long been the main arch-nemesis of Cap ever since his first appearance in the 1940s. This film will be a period piece, set in WWII:

“Virtually the entire story except the bookends are in World War II because we all recognize we have one chance to tell the origin story of how he became Captain America, you can’t tell a modern story and then go back and tell the origin story. If you’re going to do it, let’s do it. Let’s do it first. Everyone wanted to tell an origin story. There was a version where it was a modern story and it didn’t work.”

No word on casting on who will play the Red Skull, let alone no casting info on who will be Cap, although there’s a rumor of a casting decision for Cap in a few weeks. Look for this hotly anticipated film July 22, 2011!
