Cameron’s next project is taking a Voyage

Submitted by Melissa Molina on December 11, 2009 – 1:37 amOne Comment

Earlier this week there have been murmurs of what the next project for the famed filmmaker would be. The notion of him taking on yet another science fiction film has been batted around and is confirmed to an even greater degree this time. What the science fiction film that’s been dancing around his head is actually a remake of the ‘66 feature called Fantastic Voyage. The only real problem with that is Cameron would only be acting, for the time being, as a producer rather than the director of the picture.

Shane Salerno, who’s previous works include the sequel to Aliens Vs. Predators, will be penning the script. No word yet on who will be the director, but here’s more on what the Avatar director has to say on this development from Variety:

“When I pitched it to Fox, they said, ‘We’ve spent a lot of money creating all these assets, all these CG mountains, plants, trees, leaves, flowers, bugs’ — everything you saw up there on screen had been made by people at workstations over a period of years and so they have value,” said Cameron, who told the assembled U.K. media outlets that he has worked out the story for a second and third film.
“So in terms of the pitch it was: OK, you’ve spent a lot of money on the first one; on the second one we’ll be able to amortize it and focus on the story and all that … and they bought that.”
