Burton re-teams with writers for Addams Family and Big Eyes
A stop-motion animated Addams Family film has been in the very early stages of development since early June. Nothing much else was revealed, but it’s speculated it’ll be based off the original comics by Charles Addams, rather than the black and white TV show. Tim Burton will be directing the film, and has just hired two writers to pen the screenplay.
Deadline Hollywood reports that Burton will be re-uniting with  Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood) to pen not only the Addams Family film, but Big Eyes as well. While Burton will be directing the stop-motion Addams Family film, he will only be producing Big Eyes. The writers want the tone of this film to be similar to the Addams‘ comics, and have come up with a unique approach to do so. “We want the tone to be as darkly funny and subversive as the Addams drawings, and we’ve come up with an approach that nobody has ever done before,” he said.
While work on Addams Family is still being discussed, the duo have already shown Burton their script for Big Eyes. “We’d pulled it together in that equity/presale/rebate game, but the smartest thing we did was to hang on to the script and not sell it,” Alexander said. This was a smart move as it allowed Alexander and Karaszewski to change the script when Burton came on board. “That has allowed us to set the reset button with Tim, and having him helps a tremendous amount with the way the independent film world is right now,” he added. It’s unknown when Big Eyes will begin production at this time.
