Betty Thomas bails on Alvin and the Chipmunks 3?

Production on Alvin and the Chipmunks 3 was scheduled to begin in less than 2 weeks, but there’s a big problem as the film has no director. The LA Times reports that Betty Thomas has bailed on the film, and has prompted Twentieth Century Fox to quickly search for a director. The news comes from a source who’s working on the project, but the studio has yet to comment.

Thomas directed the previous entry in the series, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, and earned nearly $450 million at the box-office. No reason was given as to why she would leave the project, but it may have something to do with the direction of the film. The plot would see the chipmunks shipped wrecked on an island. A 3D release wasn’t planned, but that could change once the new director comes on board. Although, it would have to be the loathed post-production process if it happens. As of right now scheduling hasn’t changed, and is still eying a release in December of next year.
