Avatar sequels possibly headed to New Zealand
After a long drawn-out feud between Warner Bros. and the New Zealand Government, The Hobbit was finally confirmed to film in the country (here). That feud was thought to have raised doubts for many studios to film there, but it’s not stopping James Cameron from looking into returning to the country. According to IESB, Weta Digital co-director Joe Letteri has been discussing with James Cameron to have Avatar 2 and 3 shoot in New Zealand.
It’s not a sure thing, and it depends on where Cameron goes with the story in the sequels. “I know Jim would like to do that, so once we know what the story is he’d like to come down here and explore that,”Letteri said. The script is still in the early days of development, but Cameron is expected to finish the scripts and begin shooting the films next year. Weta Digital is not only famous for work on Peter Jackson’s Lord the the Rings Trilogy, but is also responsible for bringing the world of Pandora to life in Avatar. Letteri is hoping that Cameron will bring the sequels to Weta, and work on the sequels. It does seem very likely Cameron would use the studio again after winning an Oscar for the effects in Avatar.
