..and then there were 15 Docs
Variety reports that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have rounded out the number of Documentary films for the particular Oscar category to fifteen features. This is the part where people will get generally upset, because those out of the Oscar race include the popular Anvil: The Story of Anvil, The September Issue and It Might Get Loud for starters. Mind you, there were around 89 submissions casted this year alone for the documentary category, so there are going to be some casualties.
Here’s the complete list of the fifteen films still in the running. Check them out below and let us know what you think of the decision they made with what stayed and went. The Oscars will take place on March 7th, 2010:
- The Beaches of Agnes
- Burma VJ
- The Cove
- Every Little Step
- Facing Ali
- Food Inc.
- Garbage Dreams
- Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders
- The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers
- Mugabe and the White African
- Sergio
- Soundtrack for a Revolution
- Under our Skin
- Valentino: The Last Emperor
- Which Way Home

So, all of the fantastic docs I’ve seen aren’t nominated? Lame. “Enlighten Up!”, “The Union”, and “Tapped” are all better than “It Might Get Loud”.

Yeah, this is just another example of the Academy not getting it right … but that’s been so true for so long that I find it best to just enjoy the spectacle and fashion, hoping that every once in a while a great performance gets some mass recognition.

I just caught Burma VJ, and it’s really fantastic. A must see documentary about the plight of the Burmese people under oppressive military rule since the 1960s. This had better be one of the 5 that make the final nomination list.
