Akira has a star?

Interesting murmurs today about the potential star of the Hughes Brothers’ Akira from /Film. It looks like the film’s lead of Tetsou has been offered to Charlie St. Cloud‘s star, Zac Efron, although this is what the source claims, “far from a done deal.” There was also talk of Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) starring, yet there’s still work to be done on the script, as the Hughes’ are knee-deep in pre-visualization of the film.

Akira has potential of being a great live-action fantasy – if done right. The original six-volume manga was written by Katsuhiro Otomo and later turned into one of anime’s best films.

I love film. That is all.

  1. I already lost hope for this project once it was confirmed for a PG-13 rating. There’s too many adult themes that will have to be cut out for that to happen. Casting Efron would only make me avoid the film even more. I think he’s a good actor, but it needs to stick to asian casting. Don’t change Tetsuya to Bob or Jack.

  2. Looks like Hughes Bros will do the same Shamaylan did with The Last Airbender.

  3. Makes me want to buy the anime on Blu, just to erase this. But I really like the Hughes Bros. Book of Eli and From Hell rock!

  4. Haven’t seen Book of Eli, but own both From Hell and Menace II Society on BR disc. Both are solid films, still hoping for a BR release for Dead Presidents.

Want to add that to my collection.
