35 Years Ago, Jaws changed my life forever
Thirty five years ago a little film from Steven Spielberg changed the way human beings look at bodies of water, and ushered in the term ‘blockbuster’. June 20, 1975 is the day when one of the scariest movies of all-time took the nation by storm. The flick was Jaws, which is based on Peter Benchely’s best-selling novel, a masterpiece that took the real life terror of a man eating shark and put that realization right in your face. Jaws proved you didn’t need a lot of money to succeed; just a love for cinema, great actors, an amazing score, and the idea that less is more by keeping the shark in shadows for most of the film’s running time.
God bless my Mom for taking me and my family to a double feature bill of Jaws and Racing with the Devil back in the mid-70′s. I still remember being outside of the movie theater and being mesmerized by that iconic poster that just took my breath away. I was too young to know what it was, but I felt a connection to the big fish before me. When Bruce the Shark bites the dust at the end, I started to cry. Not because he was blown to smithereens in a bloody mess, but because I wanted this beautuful creature to live. To this day, Jaws remains one of my favorite films ever.
“There is a creature alive today who survived millions of years of evolution…without change, without passion and without logic. It lives to kill…a mindless eating machine. It will attack and devour…Anything. It is as if God created the Devil…and gave him…Jaws.”
