WB getting ready for post-Nolan Batman
It took 8 years for Warner Bros. to find interest in reviving Batman after Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin, but that won’t be the case after Christopher Nolan finishes his trilogy on July 20th with The Dark Knigh Rises. But a source told Batman on Film that won’t be the case this time. “Oh definitely,” the source said about WB prepping another Batman film already. “The [Batman film] franchise will be in much better shape when [Christopher] Nolan’s done next year than it was back in ‘97. [THE DARK KNIGHT] RISES will certainly leave the audience wanting more Batman on film…that wasn’t the case after BATMAN AND ROBIN,” the source continued.
We’ve already heard several rumors about the studio’s post-Nolan Batman films ranging from a Batman/Superman crossover (here), but their source confirmed earlier reports (here) of WB rebooting the franchise again. While that’s not surprising as The Dark Knight Rises will end Nolan’s take on the character, the studio wanting to move quickly into another film. “From what I’ve heard, they are already considering directors. I don’t know how much control Nolan and Emma will have over that decision, but it could be very similar to how [Zack] Synder got the Superman gig,” their source said. However, it’s uncertain how much control Nolan will have over this new reboot. “Perhaps, but I’m thinking that whoever is hired for that gig is going to be allowed the same [creative] freedom that Nolan had with his [Batman] films. No director worth his salt would accept the job any other way,” the source continued.
But there could be a problem with development of this reboot moving forward, the planned Justice League of America film (here). The studio announced that a live-action JLA was planned for 2013 (a year after Nolan finishes his trilogy), and that could “throw a monkey wrench” into the film’s development. “If [MAN OF STEEL] flops then they might panic and opt for a Justice League film. That’s not the road they want to go down in my opinion because it’s going to back ‘em into a corner. If a Justice League movie isn’t a success, they’re going to be f***ed [when it comes to DC on film],” the source continued. However, it’s unlikely the Man of Steel would flop as the film is apparently turning out quite well despite fans’ animosity towards it.
If everything turns out well, then we could get another Batman film in the next “five years at the earliest — excluding a Justice League film of course. Ten years max,” the source said. However, this should all be taken with a grain of salt, and the studio won’t likely announce anything official until The Dark Knight Rises is released on July 20th, 2012.
