Thug Life returns in Tupac
While his lyrics and poetry might be as good as anyone has ever written in the rap genre, his life was nothing short of anything we’ve seen in gangster movies. Tupac chronicles the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur, including his rise to superstardom as a hip hop artist and actor, as well as his imprisonment and prolific, controversial time at Death Row Records, where he was steeped in the East coast/West coast rap war.
What makes this project interesting is the director: Antoine Fuqua of Training Day, King Arthur, and Brooklyn’s Finest fame. I think his gritty approach will showcase a better film, than that glossy version of Biggie’s life in Notorious. It’ll be interesting to see who plays 2Pac. In Notorious, it was Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), and in his few minutes of screen time, he was the only bright spot in that film.
Even though the film has Afeni Shakur-Davis’ blessing, I hope the film showcases the turmoil of the good and the bad created by 2Pac’s passionate artistic values as seen in his CD’s 2pocalypse Now and Me Against the World, only to have his hope for humanity die in All Eyez on Me. Should be a great film, regardless.
