Surprise! There’s already ideas for Resident Evil 6

When you consider the massive backlash from the fans, it’s rather amazing that Screen Gems’ Resident Evil franchise has gone on this long. And we got out first look at the fifth installment in the franchise, Re5ident Evil: Retribution, earlier today (here). It’s looks to be the biggest of them all, and it should come to no surprise that ideas are already floating around for a sixth film.

Movieweb visited the set of  Retribution, and was able to ask both Actress Milla Jovovich and Director Paul W.S. Anderon about continuing the series. “This is the first time Paul had an idea for number 6, where there’s a story that we talked about, a year ago now, that was 5 and 6. We were just talking about it. I said ‘And then what happens?’ Then naturally, it was ‘Well, this and that and this is why and this is actually going on.’ He does have sort of a rough basis for a sixth movie,” Jovovich said. “We never make these movies thinking another one is going to come around the corner. I think that’s part of what makes them so great, is that you don’t have that comfort of going ‘Oh yeah, we’re just shooting them back-to-back. Whatever.’ We put 100 percent of our passion into each one and I think the audience reacts to that. Definitely, there’s some ideas, potentially, for a sixth movie,” she continued. That’s great as almost all films are made with the idea of sequels, but it would contradict the ending of Afterlife that was obviously left open for Retribution. Something Director Anderson confirmed. “This one starts basically with the pay off from the last one. So we are start on the deck of the Arcadia. So it is kind of like a direct continuation of that.”

One issue Anderson already had about a sixth film was shooting it back to back with Retribution, but decided against it. “There was an earlier discussion about that, but then we just decided to focus on this movie. But if it is that we make another one, I do know where it would go. It would obviously be great to kind of make two full trilogies and then just bring everything to an end,” he said. But fans of the video-game have already expressed how they would like to see this franchise get a reboot that would be more in line with the source. However, they should be happy to hear that Anderson considers a sixth installment as the finale. “Definitely. Unless, of course, no one goes to see this one. Then this one would be the finale, just maybe not a very satisfying one,” he said.

At this point, it’s unknown if we’ll see Resident Evil 6, and it all depends on how this one performs at the box-office when it opens on September 14th.
