Sorry, but no Godzilla vs. Megalon Blu-ray/DVD just yet

It seems those who want to collect all the Godzilla films on DVD have to wait longer to get Godzilla vs. Megalon. Along with The Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biollante, Godzilla vs. Megalon is one of the few films never released on DVD in the US. Well, rumor broke on March 31st that Media Blasters was planning to release Godzilla vs. Megalon on DVD and Blu-ray soon, but the studio has shot down those rumors (via SciFi Japan). “This is all news to us! We don’t know how this rumor started. Thanks for coming to the source to verify this,” Media Blasters’ Carl Morano said.

The problem is that it’s unknown what company has the licencing to create a DVD release of the film. Toho licenced the film to Cinema Shares International in 1976 for distribution in US theaters, but the studio eventually closed and the rights were left in public domain. But in 2005, the General Manager of Toho’s LA office that Good Times Entertainment had the home video rights to the film, but that studio went bankrupt as well. It’s suspected the rights are back with Toho, but legal issues are keeping them from releasing a Region 1 DVD. On a positive note, Media Blasters did mention they’re interested in getting the licencing to release the film on DVD when they become available.
