Sony won’t risk Ghostbusters 3 without Bill Murray

In early-December, Ernie Hudson mentioned that anotherGhostbusters probably won’t happen soon because of Bill Murray (here), and he could be right. The film has been gaining momentum over the past year, but Bill Murray has always been the one person to speak out against the idea. It was thought he was confirmed to be returning, but Ivan Reitman recently revealed that everything we’ve heard about this movie is wrong (here). The fate of the film is once again left with one person: Bill Murray.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Sony doesn’t want to risk Ghostbusters 3 unless Murray signs on. Why? Because the film reportedly has a budget of $150 million, and the studio doesn’t want to risk putting down that kind of money unless it’s most popular star is on board. After all, Ghostbusters 2grossed less than $126 million when released 210 years ago. However, Murray has always been the one to speak out against the movie, and even the writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (The Office) on their work for Year One. As with many, Murray probably doesn’t think another film will work after the previous installment wasn’t well-received. A script for the film has been completed, and according to Ivan Reitman, it’s the best of the three. It’s been sent to Murray, and if he approves, then the film will immediately enter pre-production.
