SDCC ’11: Underworld animated spin-off coming; More films?
It’s amazing how far the Underworld series has come since debuting in 2003. The franchise has three movies under its belt, with Underworld Awakening currently in production for a release next year.
Len Wiseman has now revealed at Comic-con (via Shock Til You Drop) that an animated spin-off movie is in the works. The film will be DTV, and is expected to debut when the Underworld box set is released, but there’s no word on when that will be. No word if Kate Beckinsale will be lending her voice to the film, and there’s no word on where it will fall in film continuity.
Meanwhile, Underworld Awakening will be released on January 20th, 2012, but that may not be the last in the series. Wiseman also hinted at Comic-con that more live-action films could be on the horizon. “We are all interested in seeing where things go. I never thought – doing the first one – that it would go where it has. I am all for taking the characters we know and throwing them into a new environment. I’m all in favor of more films,” he said. Of course, you probably already guessed the creators would be interested in continuing the franchsie as long as it keeps making money. But Kate Beckinsale isn’t getting any younger, and this maybe her last film in the series.
