Rise of the Planet of the Apes could spawn a new trilogy
Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes easily conquered the box-office last weekend, and the director has already dropped some ideas for a sequel (here). Nothing has been green-lit yet, but it’s the screenwriters turn to give their thoughts on a sequel, rather sequels.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver revealed they pictured Rise of the Planet of the Apes to spawn a new trilogy. “When we started this, we knew that this movie would stand on its own, and we designed it that way. But if it didn’t stand on its own, we pictured a trilogy that would start with this movie,” Silver said. It’s not really surprising as pretty much all films these days are seen as a trilogy, and some never get past the first film. However, Rise of the Planet of the Apes made a killing at the box-office, and you can fully expect to see a sequel to get green-lit.
While any discussions about a sequel have yet to happen, both Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver note they do have ideas. One idea they have floating around is re-introducing fans to Charlton Heston’s character from the original film. “We definitely have ideas about that! What better plant can you put in a script then, “Oh my god, Taylor’s going up again,”" Jaffa said.
